Bushcare……..
‘From Little Things, Big Things Grow’.
Bushcare conserves and enhances the bushland in the national park, regenerating habitat and preserving the natural environment for future generations.
All regular volunteers in National Parks must register online through the MyImpact portal. Please follow the prompts and specify Lane Cove National Park in your application. If you have any problems please contact the bushcare coordinator on 0419 753 806.
Friends have more than twenty regular bushcare sites around the park. Meeting weekly, bi-weekly or monthly on every day of the week, see the list below, to find the one that best suits you.
Mars Creek
This hidden creekline runs through the Macquarie University Ecology Reserve, over Curson Falls and into the National Park. Volunteers have removed weeds, revealing beautiful rock shelves and allowing the regeneration of native species and improved habitat for native animals such as swamp wallabies and powerful owls. The vegetation varies, from open woodland to gully rainforest.
The group meets on the third Saturday morning of each month.
Dalrymple Hay
This is one of the largest remaining areas of the Endangered Ecological Community , Blue Gum High Forest. This beautiful blue gum high forest at St Ives is a treasure to be enjoyed and preserved. Cockatoos, corellas and lorikeets squabble over the nesting holes in the towering blackbutts, while wrens, robins, spine bills and honey eaters forage in the understorey. Over decades many folk, young and old, have come to weed the impacted areas of the Reserve, and the regeneration is amazing.
The group meets on the second and fourth Sunday of the month.
Quarry Creek
Quarry Creek Bushcare Group was started by Noela Kirkwood and Bill Jones in 1994 after recent bushfires. Bron Hanna took over co-ordinating the group in 2020 and when Noela and Bill are not around, keeps them on speed dial with regular phone calls.
The group is always encouraged by a member who started in 1994 and who tells us that after 10 years the area was totally transformed. The site is very resilient, and it's always thrilling when you see a new banksia come up where once was a thick minefield of weeds.
The group meets on the 3rd Saturday of the month.
River Avenue
This site stretches for nearly a kilometre along the side of the Lane Cove River, with a range of habitats from highly degraded to pristine bushland, and it includes at least two Endangered Ecological Communities. All of which makes it an ideal site to learn on.
We meet every Wednesday, and have also hosted National Tree Day for the last ten years planting well over 10,000 locally indigenous plants.
We also host numerous very enthusiastic corporate groups for one off work days.
Sugar Loaf Point
Sugarloaf Point is located on the banks of the Lane Cove River. We care for areas of Estuarine Mangrove Forest; Estuarine Swamp Oak Forest; Coastal Sandstone Gully Forest and Estuarine Saltmarsh. Our bushcare group is achieving a lot on a very large site. We use recognised bushcare techniques to eradicate weeds and encourage natives plants; encourage small native birds and lizards; learn about plants and animals; get outdoors and be active; and help protect a natural hidden gem.
Carters Creek
Also known as the ‘The Friends Group’ the Carters Creek bushcare group has been working along this creekline every week for over twenty-five years and with the aid of a number of grants has made a tremendous difference to this area of the park. Once a degraded weed patch it is now almost pristine. The group has a great depth of knowledge about the plants in this area making it an ideal site to learn on.
The group meets every Thursday along Riverside Drive, not far from the park headquarters.
Remote area and Floating Bushcare
In addition to the regular bushcare meetings listed below, rangers based at Lane Cove NP also coordinate the remote area and floating bushcare program which visits sites in Marramarra National Park and Muogamarra Nature Reserve, and water-access only sites on the Hawkesbury River and Berowra and Cowan Creek
Watch this space for details of the 2024 events as soon as they become available.
