Flannel flowers are common in sandy soil, in pockets on rock shelves and sometimes surrounding seepage areas. 'Actinotus' means 'with rays', 'helianthi' means 'similar to the common sunflower'.
The plants are 50-100 cm high and softly textured. Both the petals and grey-green divided leaves are felty in texture.
