Callistemon citrinus is an erect shrub about 2 m high, found in swampy heath. It also tolerates drier locations.
The lanceolate leaves are hard and stiff with sharp points. They are up to 7 cm long and about 8mm wide. Young leaves are flesh-coloured and hairy. The name citrinus = lemony. Crushed leaves have a citrus scent.
The flower spikes grow to 12 cm long. Each flower has 5 inconspicuous petals. The bright red filaments are the stamens.
Callistemon citrinus flowers from October to December and sometimes from March to May.
