Clematis aristata is a strong, twining climber in rainforest and tall open forests, with masses of white flowers in Spring. The clumped fruits each have a fine hairy tail, giving an overall effect of a wispy white beard.

Male and female flowers are on separate plants. The flowers are white, 35-50 mm wide.

Mature leaves are opposite, 3-foliate, 2-7 cm long. They are slightly lance-shaped, with 3 parallel veins and toothed margins. Juvenile leaves are single, dark green and oval with silver veins.

Clematis aristata flowers conspicuously in September, October, November, but is also very showy when seeding.
