Dampiera purpurea is an erect many-stemmed shrub about 1-1.5m high. It is found in sheltered places in woodland on sandy soils. It is not as common as Dampiera stricta.

The whole plant - stems, leaf undersurfaces, buds and the backs of flowers are covered with fine rusty hairs.

The leaves are round-oval, 25-30 cm across, with a rough surface. They are sometimes toothed.

The flowers are purple with yellow centres, in clusters near the ends of the branches. 

Dampiera purpurea usually flowers in October and November.
