Hardenbergia violacea is a climber, twining gracefully around the shrubs of the lower understorey in sheltered woodland regions. It also makes an attractive display over stony or hard disturbed ground, often twisting around itself to form a dense mass of flowers in Spring.

The stiff leaves of Hardenbergia violacea are simple, ranging from lance to heart shaped, 3-15cm long and have a prominent network of veins.

The flowers are purple with yellow centres, in axillary racemes. The name "violacea" refers to the flowers' similarity to violets.

Hardenbergia violacea flowers from July to October.
