Lobelia purpurascens is a small herb commonly found in moist and sheltered places, on many types of soils. The stems, no more than 15 cm long, may hug the ground or stand upwards.

The alternate leaves of Pratia purpurascens are elliptic and toothed, 10-25mm long and purplish underneath.

The white to pale purple flowers are single, on the ends of long stalks. 

Lobelia purpurascens flowers from December to May.
